Start with Your Alfresco Grill Model Number
Every Alfresco grill has a model number and serial number stamped on a data plate located under the grease tray. Pull the tray forward and look for the sticker on the firebox or frame. If the label has worn off, the grill's dimensions (30-inch, 36-inch, 42-inch, or 56-inch) and burner count can help narrow down the series.
Alfresco has produced three main grill series. The AGBQ (first generation) includes models AGBQ-30, AGBQ-30SZ, AGBQ-42, AGBQ-42SZ, and AGBQ-56. The ALX2 (second generation) retains the exterior rotisserie feature and introduced updated ignition systems, available in 30-inch, 36-inch, 42-inch, and 56-inch sizes. The ALXE (current generation) is the flagship series, offering 15 cooking methods and full electronic ignition, with models including ALXE-30, ALXE-36, ALXE-42, and others.
Match the Burner to Your Series
Alfresco grills use two main burner types: the stainless steel u-burner for primary cooking and the infrared sear burner for high-heat searing. The key difference between series is the burner mounting bracket. AGBQ models use a bracket on the bottom of the firebox, while ALX2 and ALXE models use a bracket at the back of the firebox. An AGBQ burner will physically fit in an ALX2 or ALXE — you simply ignore the bottom bracket — but an ALX2/ALXE burner may not mount securely in an AGBQ without the correct bracket.
When replacing a burner, check whether your model includes a smoker burner or side burner — these require separate replacement parts and are available in OEM-only configurations for sear zone and smoker burners.
Choose the Right Heat Plate and Briquette Tray
Alfresco's heat distribution system consists of three components: briquette trays, ceramic briquettes, and lock bars. The briquette tray sits above the u-burner, separating the flame from the cooking surface. In the AGBQ series, trays have small holes on each end with pegs locking them into place. In the ALX2 and ALXE series, the tray simply sits on a ledge — no pegs required.
All Alfresco grills use the same signature "A" ceramic briquettes, which vaporize drippings to create rich smoky flavor. The ALX2 and ALXE series add lock bars that screw in between rows of briquettes, keeping them secure during transport and enabling Alfresco's self-cleaning feature — simply flip the tray over and run the burner on high to burn off residue. Briquette trays for the 30-inch, 42-inch, and 56-inch models are available only in OEM; the 36-inch tray is available in aftermarket with lock bars. No tray should be placed over the sear zone burner.
Identify Your Ignition System
Alfresco has used three ignition systems across its generations, so identifying your series is essential before ordering. AGBQ grills use a push-button ignition powered by a single AA battery. Early ALX2 models (serial numbers 10-99999 and lower) use a 9-volt battery with a two- or four-spark igniter module, while later ALX2 units (serial numbers 11-00000 and forward) use electronic ignition. The ALXE series uses fully electronic ignition with no battery required.
Common ignition replacement parts include igniter modules, electrodes, igniter switches, wires and wiring harnesses, and igniter shields. If you remove the front control panel and the ignition layout is unclear, check the serial number prefix — it will tell you which system your grill has.
Why 304 Stainless Steel Matters
Alfresco grills are constructed from commercial-grade 304 stainless steel, and every replacement part should match that standard. Lower-grade steel (such as 430 or 201 stainless) can warp and rust within a season or two of high-heat cooking. 304 food-grade stainless steel contains higher nickel and chromium content, making it corrosion-resistant and able to withstand the repeated thermal cycling of outdoor grilling. Alfresco's u-burners, briquette trays, and cooking grids are all built to this spec — and aftermarket parts that claim compatibility should specify 304 stainless to be worth your investment.
